Strikeout Type 1 Diabetes
Strikeout Type 1 Diabetes, or “KT1D”, is a non-profit 501c3 charitable organization that was founded by Samp’s Hack Shack owners, Amy and Bill Sampen. Amy and Bill have two sons that have type 1 diabetes, and a granddaughter who has tested positive for 5/5 antibodies necessary for type 1 diabetes to manifest itself. Countless other friends and Hack Shack family members have also been effected by this relentless disease. Needless to say, this disease “hits home” for them.
Type 1 diabetes only accounts for roughly 5% of all diabetes and is much different from the much more common form of diabetes – type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, whereas type 2 diabetes occurs from poor lifestyle choices and is reversible with exercise and diet. There is no cure for type 1 diabetes! (click HERE for article to information about recent advances towards a cure for type 1 diabetics) Type 1 diabetes forces its patients to make dosing decisions 24/7/365 with insulin – a potentially lethal substance.
Strikeout Type 1 Diabetes mission is to:
- Raise awareness of type 1 diabetes
- Provide education, advocacy, and resources for students/parents with type 1 diabetes of their rights in the classroom and in competition sports
- Provide financial aide to those working hard towards a cure for type 1 diabetes
- Provide collegiate scholarships to students with type 1 diabetes
